Some passings from the Western U.S.:

Ed Dimock, who raced sprint cars in northern California and the Western U.S., passed away June 5 at age 80.

Jay East, 86, passed away May 19.  A popular and well-liked racer, East raced in jalopies, following the evolution into super modifieds and on to sprint cars. East won 7 or 8 CRA sprint car features (there is conflicting information).

Bud Eastin, 76, died June 16. Eastin raced in Utah from 1961 through 1970, notably at Salt Lake City Fairgrounds Speedway.

Ed Negre, 86, who raced stock cars from his Washington state roots, on to the Midwest and NASCAR's top circuit, passed away on June 4.  He made 338 starts in NASCAR's top series from 1955 through 1979, competing regularly in the series from 1967 through 1979 as an owner-driver.  Negre sometimes let others drive his car, including a young Dale Earnhardt, who made his first career start in NASCAR's top series in Negre's car.  More on Ed Negre can be found in this article.

"Cap" Pidgeon raced stock cars on Southern California tracks from the 70s through 2000s, particularly at Ascot Park.

Owen Sullender, 85, passed away April 16.  Sullender raced midgets in the Western U.S. in the 1960s.

Chuck Tontz, 90, passed away March 28. Tontz raced midgets and sprint cars in the Western U.S., most notably in the Pacific Northwest in the 50s and 60s. Tontz was the 1961 Oregon Midget Racing Association champion.

Re: Jay East, I have eight CRA wins for him. I am guessing the conflict stems from the fact that Bob East started winning before Jay was through with it, and so his last win may have been "misplaced"    ;)

Thanks Michael.  I wasn't able to dig through all my material, which would have answered it conclusively, but I leaned to 8 because I considered the source more likely to be accurate.

Jay East was extremely well-liked by his fellow drivers, who considered him a fair and clean racer. He was a decent, capable driver quite late in his career, which came to an end after a 1980 flip at Ascot left him with eye damage that sadly, deteriorated over the rest of his life. On a personal note, Jay East was racing CAR super modifieds when I first started attending races. RIP Jay.

We have lost Sprint Car legend Jerry Blundy (http://obituaries.ga...y&pid=171738025&), a two-time IMCA champion, two-time Knoxville Speedway track champion (during Super Modifieds years), and champion of the Mississippi Valley and Mid States Racing Associations way back in the early fifties. I have a total of 40 IMCA Sprint Car wins between 1957 and '72, and many more all over the Midwest in a career spanning fully three decades - beginning with a win July 1 in 1951 at Peoria/IL, and still going strong with a second to Mike Brooks at Knoxville on July 14, 1979! Probably best known for his three successive wins on the California State Fairgrounds mile track in Sacramento, 1968 - '70, beating all the local hot shoes as well as the fellow Eastern "invaders". Tried USAC (best finish 6th at Alabama State Fairgrounds in '59 and again at IRP in '61) and WoO (15th at Knoxville April '79), but remained a true "outlaw" most of his career.

RIP.

Reinhard, no...I am sorry, the links I provided are all I have.  Obituaries are getting to the point where they don't always include dates.

It seems Donnie Tilford's full name was not Donald Eugene Tilford, Jr., but Donald Gene Tilford.

As such the California Birth Record Index gives his birth date as 1 May 1955.

Sad news indeed.

I recently interviewed his friend and co-driver for some years, Ruggero Melgrati, who had this to say about Finotto when I asked him what made him a good co-driver;

Most of your co-drives have been with Martino Finotto. What makes him such a good co-driver? Is he the best you've had, or do you have any other favourites?

I met Finotto when he was already 53. Everybody was considering him a gentleman driver, a rich man who was addicted to women, but not a top driver.

Well, in truth, he started racing at 37, and at 40 he raced at the old Silverstone circuit in Touring Cars with a BMW, got pole, and then won the race. So, he had talent.

Well, for me, he was “the perfect one” to share a sports car with: experienced, reliable and with a “chronographerpace” in long-distance races. He was also very intelligent, strong with maths and a very good strategist. Also, although it doesn’t affect his driving he’s a wonderful chef, cooking Italian food with style and taste!

Other good mates I drove with were definitely Carlo Facetti and Chip Robinson

Sorry to see this, as I am sure we all are.

But what a website you have pointed us to, Richie. The infamous Crystal Palace Hunt/Morgan shunt and Hunt in a Martini, plus many more incredible images.

No disrespect intended to poor Jurg.  God rest his soul.

An obituary I stumbled across from late 2012:

"Bucky" Stoner , 72, died Christmas night 2012 in Montclair, California. Stoner's father was involved in racing in Southern California as a driver, car owner and official covering jalopies, hot rods and super modifieds. Stoner raced super modifieds with CAR in the early to mid-60s and briefly raced stock cars on the local NASCAR circuit after the supers faded away in Southern California in 1968.

Dave Fitzgerald, 57, died in a plane crash in Idaho on August 5. Utah's Fitzgerald raced super modifieds with great success, winning the 1985 and 1986 USAC Utah Super Modified championship and won three races in the 1986 USAC National Super Modified series. USAC announcement at their website.

Ron Horton, 66, died August 22. Beginning in the unique sportsman class at Antioch Speedway, Horton and his brother Rick moved on to NARC sprint cars where both had great success. Ron won 16 NARC feature races and finished in the top 10 in points from 1975 through 1978 and 1980 through 1983 as well as 1985, with a best ranking of second in points coming in 1975 and 1985.  He would finish third in points in 1977 and 1978 and fourth in 1980.  He was particularly strong on the dirt at Calistoga, winning 7 times, and the pavement at Altamont, where he won 6 times. He also scored feature wins at Dixon, Petaluma and Chico.

EDIT: Thanks to Michael Ferner for filling in additional and later details on Ron Horton's career.

Michael, thanks for the details.  At the moment, I don't even have access to my collection of racing papers.  Living in the Bay Area during much of that time, I remembered Ron Horton as one of the area's top sprint car racers.  Quite an impressive record when one sees it all in one place.

Just saw this and thanks for letting us know, Frank.

I met Grady a few times in his 914 days, and he seemed like a good guy. A good friend and karter in my class in the '80s, Nils Holten, worked for Grady and we visited the shop a few times. It seems he and a sign client of mine, Raleigh Gardenhire were teammates, could be in err on that. RIP.

Thanks Again for everyone's work on this thread!

British rally driver George Hill died recently (25 August 2014). Source

One of his co-drivers was Keith Wood who apparently died as early as 2000. Since 2001 there is a Keith Wood Memorial Rally.

What I did find is his full name (Keith Allan Wood), his hometown (Oldham, Lancashire) and his birth date (10 February 1939). Is anyone able to detect the date of his passing? I would appreciate it.

Some passings in the Western U.S. over the past few months:

Ernie Lamm, 91, July 25 at Roseville, CA. Lamm was a racer and flagman at West Capital Raceway in West Sacramento, California.

Ron Strmiska (Sr.), 73, September 3 at Stockton, CA. Strmiska was a top pavement late model racer, racing out of Manteca. He was a regular competitor at Stockton 99 Speedway and had raced at Madera Speedway, but also was a competitor in late model open races up and down California in the 70s and 80s.

Jim Soares, 68, September 7. Soares promoted race tracks, dabbled with driving, but was probably best known for his talent for preparing dirt racing surfaces.

Ted Foltz, 81, September 17. Foltz began racing the short track Pikes Peak Speedway in Colorado Springs, moving on to the famed Pike's Peak Hill Climb, where he was a three-time winner. He won the open wheel class in 1970 and 1980 and won the stock car class in 1975.

Yes, it is. Sorry for the typo, thank you for the correction. I do these when I am very, very tired and have precious little time to do so, so I apologize in advance for the occasion typographical error that slips in.  It's quite a bit of cutting and pasting and cross referencing while having multiple windows open and proofing is where they slip in.  If you'd prefer, I could skip doing them altogether.

I watched Rom Strmiska race several times. A very good short track racer at a track (Stockton 99 Speedway) full of them.  So, I recall how his name is spelled, just not under the conditions I work under :D

Jim, no worries but thanks for respecting the lost and your dedication to accuracy. Appreciated.

Bob, thanks for letting us know about Warren, a long and admired fixture of my childhood. Always fast, his orange Z28 was downright wicked.

If I may, I think many of us long-timers miss the days of the independent running with bigger guns, if only to show us what's possible with a bit of heart. Warren was one of those and his loss is too damned early.

RIP, with sad respects.

Jerry Dunbar, a long time participant in US sports car racing, mainly in the Wisconsin-Illinois area, passed away this weekend. Jerry started racing in the early 1950s and continued until he retired in 1996. He drove MGs, an Edwards Special, a D Jaguar-Chev, two Corvettes, a Camaro, and finally a Firebird later converted to a Camaro. He was a fixture at Road America and Blackhawk Farms, rarely missing a race at either track. He was the 1980 SCCA GT-1 Champion, winning the Runoffs at Road Atlanta that year. He rarely drove in pro races, but did a season or two of IMSA Kelly Challenge in the mid 1980s. A big fellow, he was very easy to spot at the track. Had a great voice and his civilian career was as a radio announcer. Very friendly and approachable. Spent many years as an official in the SCCA and the Midwest Council of Sports Car Clubs. One of the designers of Blackhawk Farms.

Taken from the WWW here is an article about Jerry Dunbar published in the Beloit Daily News issue Wednesday, 23 July 1997 (author: Shawn Stapleton):

Auto racing legend Dunbar to join Hall of Fame

His walls bear shelf after shelf of trophies, awards, medals and pictures, all a testimonial to his lengthy and rewarding racing career.

But Jerry Dunbar doesn't accept praise easily.

In fact, Dunbar said he would much rather see other area racers receive the Stateline Area's highest sports honor rather than himself. On Thursday, Dunbar will be inducted, along with four other area sports figures, into the Beloit Historical Society's Sports Hall of Fame at the Lincoln Center.

Dunbar's accomplishments are almost too lengthy to mention. He became a world-champion sailboat racer at age 15. At age 17 he was crowned a Illinois state wrestling champ. Thirty years later he became a national race car champion. To date he has hundreds of racing wins to his credit.

Dunbar doesn't do anything half way.

Roger Jerome “Jerry” Dunbar was born Feb. 23, 1933 in Peoria, Ill., and from the time he was just a tot he took to the water with his father. He sailed Lake Michigan so often the currents, the breezes and the intricacies of the big pond became as familiar as an old friend.

That familiarity gave him the edge when, as a high school student in Wilmette, Ill., he and a friend entered the world sailing championships held at Wilmette Harbor. They and another team were the only local entries.

“There was no wind that day. It was a dead calm,” he recalled, leaning back in his chair. “We knew where the breeze was, and we knew there was current down by the old canal inlet. That advantage gave us the win. No one else knew that part of the lake like we did, and we used it.”

He didn't stop there, although if he could have lived on a boat he would have.

In high school, Dunbar used his size on the wrestling mat and was crowned Illinois State Heavyweight Champion in 1950.

“Those two things aren't really what I'm most proud of, though,” he explained, leaning up against the blue trailer that hauls his car from track to track. “This is what I'm most proud of. We've done some pretty great things in racing.”

Dunbar has always loved cars and loved competition. Racing cars was a natural fit.

He's never had the lavish entourage that some other racers sport. When it comes to tweaking and tuning, with the exception of the engine or transmission, it's all Dunbar.

His preference for road racing is simple: its versatility.

“Oval racing is very technical driving, but not too many champions of oval racing can complete in road racing. It's just a different type of driving,” he said.

And Dunbar is considered one of the best. In 1980, at the age of 47, Dunbar took home the checkered flag at Road Atlanta to become a national champion race car driver, but he was idolized by racing fans long before that.

That's because, while the races may not have been for a national title, Dunbar has been a frontrunner in all of them. He's got a pile of checkered flags huddled in a basement corner to prove it. He's got more than 1,000 starts under his belt. He has raced more miles at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wis., than any other driver in the track's history. He's won more than 200 individual races _ on every track he's raced _ and has accumulated more points than any other driver in his class. He placed in the top three in the National GT-1 standings for 11 consecutive years.

He turned pro in 1984, a status he voluntarily ended five years later.

Dunbar knows driving.

He still races six or seven times a year all across the country. He says his thinking is a little different today than it was 10 or 12 years ago, when he was such a fierce competitor he was barely accepting the trophy for one race before looking ahead to the next.

“I was racing not too long ago when I hit the turn and was thinking about where my wife and I were going to eat that night,” he said, a smile crossing his face. ”That's when I said, 'You've got to concentrate.' That's when it can get dangerous.”

This one really hurts. Jerry Dunbar was a local regular for many of us, for me since the late-'60s. I've seen him run at Road America, Blackhawk, and Brainerd, to name a few. My wife and I sat trackside at Road Atlanta in 1980, rooting Jerry on to his only Runoffs national championship. He was more than due, and that was one great day.

Always cordial and fast as anyone, just a couple years back I learned one of our best friends in Denver was a neighbor of the Dunbars growing up. Small world, this game of ours.

Condolences to fellow TNFer, SAdunbar, Jerry's son, and to all close to him. Sad day for SCCA Central Division regulars indeed.

RIP #32, thanks for the memories and inspirations.

The post you refer to is just an announcement of the most recent updates. Its predecessor from October 2014 contained Peter Ray but I deleted that posting when I posted the new one (which in turn will be deleted as soon as I'll do the next announcement *).

Peter Ray`s dates are still there in post # 7.

* ... that is what happened now...

Reinhard, at the turn of another year I should like to say thank you for your tireless efforts maintaining your lists of motor sport births and deaths, and keeping us updated on them. I refer to your lists on a regular basis, as I'm sure many others here do. Please keep up the good work.

Wishing you (and all TNFers) a very Happy New Year.

Someone who I thought was long gone passed away only recently at the grand old age of nearly 104 years.
One of the rare centenarians in motor racing: Tom (= Thomas John) Clarke, b. 23 January 1911, d. 18 January 2015.
He was known as a member of the British 500 scene in the early 1950s.
According to this obituary he was a sports car racer in the 1930s but I think the BRDC got him mixed up with Tommy (= Thomas Graves) Clarke (1911 – 1969).
