Caroline used to be a regular at TNF gatherings at Goodwood, Stoneleigh and elsewhere, and many of us will have fond memories of her quirky, bubbly personality and her useful ability to produce a can (or three) of Stella from her handbag when needed. We shall miss her.
RIP Caroline.
The forums will not be the same without her...
But I'm quite sure she wouldn't like to see us quit enjoying what we do, as enjoying what she did was her way of life.

Some additonal notable passings from the Western U.S. short track scene during 2021.
Jerry Bowers, raced stock cars out of Idaho, first on local short tracks, then in NASCAR series in the late 1980s/early 1990s - Southwest Tour, Northwest Tour and West. In 1987, he won a NASCAR NW Tour race at Tri-City Raceway in W. Richland WA and a SW Tour race at T-Car Speedway in Carson City, NV the following year. There were only a couple of occasions where Bowers ran even half the schedule. The lone season he ran a full schedule was the 1987 NW Tour, a year he finished 2nd in points.
Bob Cetti of Fresno, California, raced the fire-breathing upright-style NASCAR super modifieds from the mid-1960s through the early 1970s, primarily at Kearney Bowl Speedway in Fresno and Madera Raceway in Madera. From 1965-1968, Cetti regularly featured in the top 10 in points at Kearney Bowl and in State of California standings. His best year was 1972 when he finished 4th in California state standings, scoring a win at both San Jose Speedway and the recently opened Madera that season.
John Padjen was a long-time promoter of Northern California dirt tracks, first at West Capital Raceway in West Sacramento, and then at Placerville Speedway and Chico's Silver Dollar Speedway

I'm particularly sorry to hear of the passing of Eberhard Mahle. I had the privilege of meeting him at the 2011 Rennsport at Monterey...a very nice man. I will continue to wear my Mahle Motorsport cap proudly. The second photo shows Mahle signing autographs with Hans Herrmann (sorry for the color from my failing camera):

He was the man who convinced Niki Lauda to leave the Scuderia Ferrari in 1977, to join team Brabham, sponsored by Parmalat. Ecclestone secured a sponsorship deal with Parmalat, until 1985. The Brabham-Parmalat won the World Championship in 1981 and 1983 with Piquet.
The company collapsed in 2003 and Tanzi was jailed for fraud. But his role in motorsport history was crucial.

News reaches me from across the Atlantic that the very experienced endurance racer, Vic Rice, has passed away. He was a gentleman in every sense of the word and it was a privilege to have known him.

I have been told that well know 60s and 70s and then 90s open car racer Stan Keen has died on 25/1/22.
He raced both 5000s and big sports cars using a Ford engine. Used the same engine and transaxle in both cars.
In the 90s he made a comeback racing ex TAFE Shrike Formula Holdens. At one stage he had three of them, one for himself, one for lease drives and one as a hillclimb car. There was a seperate award to the CAMS Gold Star for the aluminium cars which he won.
At least one of those cars is at the Birdwood Mill Museum.
He ran 'Stan Keen Motors' on South Rd Melrose Pk for many years until I guess 20 years ago. His No1 son David then ran it for several more years but gave up with Burglaries. Then Davids son Michael ran it for a couple of years but it got too hard
He is survived by wife Fay, sons David, John, Bill and Paul

Not a good day, that started off with news of Tim Considine passing. Then I find out that another friend, Tony Light, also died this week. Tony was a familiar figure in the Le Mans media centre as he assisted the ACO with live coverage of their various events. He also helped to run ClubArnage.com. In his earlier life as an accountant, he worked for several years at Brabham and FOCA. Both men will be missed.

Dad started racing in the late 50s at Craboon in central west NSW, running on dirt tracks and gymkhanas in firstly his road car at the time. Then moved to a Holden engined special. He continued running in these events until he purchased his first real race car in September 1967, a 1962 Nota Sportsman clubman. This car was Guy Buckinghams personal car when new.
This car and dad have a very very long association being a partnership till late 2020 when it was handed down to me.
Between these two, they racked up 8 NSW hillclimb championships in both Sports cars under 1600 cc and later in the VHT class. Along with these titles were a number of top three finishes in various Australian hillclimb titles for both sports and VHT classes.
In the late 1980s, dad took the Nota circuit racing and had a few top 3 finishes in his class, which was Group M sports cars 1100 to 1500cc.
To dad, it wasn't about winning, it was about the friendships he forged along the way. 53 years of motorsports with until 2012 his late wife always by his side, this was a journey that made lifelong friends.
He is survived by his three boys Brad, Stu and Jase, and 3 grand children and 3 Great grand children.
Those that knew him, and there are a few here, remember him fondly as you were part of his life, and you were part of a culture that made him happy.
RIP dad.

As one who, all too briefly, knew hime, I know what you have said is true...
He loved his Clubman and hillclimbing and being with those who were involved. A loss indeed.
My condolences to yourself and family.

Historic Japanese Racing Cars have announced that Kunimitsu Takahashi has passed away.
Oh, what terrible news.
Too many people define him for an one-off drive in a non-works Tyrrell.
But his service to the sport - on two and four wheels - was colossal.
He raced for 41 years and then ran his team for another 20 plus. RIP.

Hello all,
I noticed actor Conrad Janis ( Mindy's dad on tv show Mork & Mindy) passed away on March 1st 2022.
My question is this : There is a Conrad Janis list at RacingReference as having competed in the 1954 International 100 at Linden NJ road course as having finished 39th driving a Jaguar. This driver has the same birth date (Feb 11 1928 )as the actor , so i'm wondering if Mr Janis did make that start way back then and if anyone based in the region remembers his activity racing back then.
Keep in mind this is the race Al Keller won while driving a Jaguar as well , and the finishing order has MGs Porsche listed as well among the finishers.
thanks
Paul

Thank all for the responses to the question in the Conrad Janis post.
Since i never saw mention of his racing days in the press , i wonder if anyone ever thought to ask him about it.
Funny thing is there cant be many actors who actually raced in Nascar's top series overall , and this sounds like a good opportunity to win some bar bets over actors who might have raced in nascar.
( BTW i dont count racers who later in their who starred in movies (example Richard Petty in 43 The Petty Story movie)

Paul, I was going to write that I think one is safe in assuming the Conrad Janis that competed in the NASCAR race is the same as the actor, but I've been surprised and caught unaware by more than one person having the same extremely uncommon name. For example, I would never have anticipated that there would have been two different men named Major Melton from the same area.
On the other end of it, websites often combine multiple drivers with common names as one in the same. It was that way at Racing Reference for Bill Foster (one from California, one from North Carolina); Jim Cook (one from California, the other from North Carolina) and the four different drivers named Bill Scott, who were also combined at one point under Billy Scott, who was yet another driver.
And that's not even counting the Bill Scott that was the formula super vee racer.

Social media brings news of the passing of Marty Kaufmann, the former IMSA/ALMS Race Director.
Marty was universally respected and liked throughout the endurance racing paddocks of North America and will be sadly missed. He was a genuinely good guy, another racing friend gone.

Word on the Tyrrell grapevine is that Nigel Steer, former mechanic for Surtees, former chief mechanic at Tyrrell, chief mechanic and team manager at Minardi and (I believe) was still working in motorsport with Alpha Tauri, died this month. I'm afraid I don't have more information than that currently.
EDIT - Died of cancer on Tuesday,12th April. Not sure about age but I would have to presume around 64-65 years of age perhaps?

Not a racing man, but I think it's worth recording the passing of Sir Ray Tindle, a newspaper proprietor who was very much not cast in the Maxwell/Murdoch/Beaverbrook/Rothermere/Lebedev mould and was a stalwart of the London-Brighton Run, completing it more than fifty times on his 1904 Speedwell.

Rhodesian Grahame Johnson sadly passed away. Lived in Brisbane.
Information just shared by today in Rhodesian motor sport group on social media:
"It is with great sadness I inform the group of the passing of Grahame Johnson (Charlie to some) in Australia last night. He was a legend in the rally world and an idol to me [...]"
Anyway, Grahame was quite active in this group, also.
